Spelling is taught from Years 2-6 as part of our daily teaching routine. Year 2 also teach alongside Phonics. The children will be taught the spelling rule at the start of the week through direct teaching and then revisit this rule with a variety of activities throughout the week to support working memory. Our curriculum covers the spelling rules and statutory word lists set out in the national curriculum. The children are tested each week on their spellings through oral dictation of sentences given by the teacher. Each week the spelling rule is also interwoven into Writing lessons to allow the children to learn how to apply to spellings to sentences.
Each week children are taught through direct teaching a grammar rule, following the National Curriculum. The children also revisit this rule throughout the week building up to their extended write towards the end of the week where they can apply the grammar rule effectively. Children are encouraged to apply this learning in their writing across the curriculum and different genres. As they progress towards Year 6 children begin to explore how different grammatical structures can be more purposeful for different text types and the begin to explore the effect of this on their writing and the reader.
