Our approach to the English Curriculum places the learner at the heart of the planning, teaching and learning process. It is designed to help the children to become better speakers, listeners, readers, writers and thinkers. It allows the children to learn, to form concepts, connect ideas and express themselves through exposure to language, story and text. A heavy emphasis is placed on across developing children’s vocabulary. By the time children leave St Nicholas in Year 6, we aim for them to have the skills and confidence to read and write across genres, use a wide range of vocabulary, apply Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling skills and develop their passion for English. Please refer to the progression documents for information on knowledge and skills taught in our school which links to the National Curriculum.
