St Nicholas Church of England Primary School

Starting School

Our children enjoy coming to school and this is due to our close partnership with parents and carers.  Together we ensure that new children quickly feel safe, secure and keen to explore.

Whether your child starts with us in Reception or in any other year, we take time to meet you and your child in person, in order that we have sufficient information to ensure a successful first day.

Other events held in the evening and during the day are further opportunities for parents to meet staff, governors and other parents and to hear more about the school and the curriculum.   We are committed to working together with you and to share how we can  best support your child's welfare and learning.

We are exceptionally proud of our children who, by the end of Year 6, are sufficiently confident and determined to move onto the next stage of their education and to tackle new challenges ahead.

In order to support a smooth transition into Reception and Year 3, we have a programme of events for our new starters and their parents. These include

  • A Welcome Meeting held in June for all new parents
  • A Story-Telling session for Reception as their first introduction to our school
  • A Stay and Play session for Reception children to start to become familiar with their new setting
  • A 1:1 meeting between the parents and the new teacher, for both Reception and Year 3 children
  • Informal Tours after school for Year 3 children and their parents
  • Move up Morning for all children to spend time in their new classroom with their new teacher
  • Move Up Afternoon for our new Year 3 children to come and play and make new friends
  • Invitations to events at school during the Summer term such as a Bread-Sharing Service for the new Year 3 children, the School Fair and our open-house Celebration Evening for everyone to join
  • Shorter day sessions for Reception in September to enable them to get to know their teacher and school routines in a smaller group.
