Physical Education

At St Nicholas, we aim for every child to:

Understand how Physical Education helps everyone enjoy being active, learn new skills, and try their best in lots of different sports and activities.

Recognise that PE helps them feel confident when moving their bodies and teaches them how to stay healthy and fit.

Play games and sports that help them to learn how to be fair, kind, and respectful to others.

In PE, we aim to help all children to:

  • learn and improve skills in many different physical activities
  • be active for longer periods of time
  • enjoy taking part in games and sports, including competitions
  • understand how to live a healthy, active life

Teaching and Learning

At St Nicholas, we use the GetSet4PE scheme, which is aligned to the National Curriculum and ensures knowledge and skills progression from Year R to Year 6.

This scheme allows us to design our own curriculum based on what the children of St Nicholas need. We’re also able to ensure that we teach the EYFS Goals and KS1 and 2 National Curriculum outcomes. The scheme builds on knowledge and skills throughout all year groups, enabling the children to have a firm foundation when they meet the knowledge and skills again. We teach hour-long weekly indoor and outdoor PE sessions, focusing on one unit of learning each half-term for each.

Assessment

We assess children's learning against the key objectives for their Year Group. If a child is working below this level, we refer to the appropriate skills and knowledge and aim to close any gaps, to enable them to achieve as well as their peers. We use a tracking system called Sonar, to identify objectives met and those still to cover. The majority of assessment will take place formatively through observation.
