Phonics Screening Check – Year 1 - 58 children
The Phonics Screening Check is a list of 40 words (some real and some pseudo ‘alien’ words) that children have to decode. If they read 32 words accurately, this a ‘pass’. Children who do not achieve 32, can retake the check in Year 2.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Profile was significantly revised in September 2021; therefore, it is not possible to directly compare 2021/22 assessment outcomes with earlier years.
The Department for Education explains that the Good Level of Development (GLD) is a performance measure for children in Reception Class or the EYFS. Children are defined as having reached a ‘good level of development’ at the end of their year in Reception if they have achieved at least the expected level in:-
- personal, social and emotional development
- physical development
- communication and language
- specific areas of mathematics and literacy
